Optical pick-ups: from pioneer to worldwide leader

In November 2000 Thomson multimedia's OKMCO (Optical Key Module & Component Organization) facility in China celebrated the production of its fifty millionth optical pick-up for the CD and DVD markets. The event also marked an anniversary: thirty years previously, Thomson engineers in the Group's Orsay laboratory near Paris had registered their first patents in the then brand new field of optical disc technology...
