Operating new TV services
With its leadership position in digital decoders, DVD, and others
multimedia products, Thomson multimedia intends to accelerate the
development of plate-forms that deliver entertainment and information
services into the home.
The television set is becoming a portal that enables access to
a large selection of personalized content and services with which
the consumer can interact. These developments are opening great
markets with high potential and in which Thomson multimedia is
involved through its New Media Services Strategy.
Thomson multimedia have become a key player in electronic program
guides. With the multiplication of television channels, electronic
program guides have become essential. To develop these new services,
Thomson multimedia have join forces with Gemstar. Thomson multimedia
holds a 5% stake in Gemstar and the two partners have established
a joint venture, @TV MEDIA to sell advertising on the millions
of electronic program guides viewed each day. At the end of 2000,
in the United States, over 4 million TV sets were already equipped
with electronic program guides.
In Europe, Thomson multimedia launched the first range of interactive
intelligent television sets which give access to a wide, upgradeable
offer of services: THOMSON TAK interactive TV.
