An Industry First: Built-In DVD with Projection HDTV Monitors
New York - July 10, 2002 - RCA Scenium, the premium upscale home theatre product range from Thomson (Euronext: 18453) (NYSE: TMS) grows this year in both stature and performance with a line of widescreen rear-projection, direct-view and plasma HDTV Monitors that includes selected models with built-in DVD players. The new RCA and RCA Scenium HDTV Monitor models – all of which feature 16x9 widescreen displays for theatre-like impact – incorporate secure digital interfaces for seamless display of high-definition digital content as well as convenience features that add a personal touch to the digital entertainment experience. The complete range includes an all-new line of nine new widescreen monitors, including four with built-in DVD.
“RCA Scenium is the perfect blend of high technology and high-style design.
We have made every effort to equip these new RCA Scenium and RCA HDTV Monitors with the latest picture and audio performance technologies in order to create a total entertainment experience that mirrors the enjoyment of a trip to the movies,” said Eric Meurice, Executive Vice President, TV Division Worldwide. “Four of these progressive scan models feature built-in DVD players. Monitors also include 3D YC Digital Frame Comb filters in projection models and Digital three-line Comb Filters in direct-view models for improved visual clarity and Virtual Dolby Surround to enhance audio enjoyment. And all of Thomson's HDTV Monitors include digital inputs that accept uncompressed, pristine HDTV signals from set-top HDTV sources," Meurice said.
Expressive Global Design
The new line of RCA Scenium HDTV projection TV Monitors has been designed to appeal to consumers throughout the world. Thomson's design centers in the U.S. and Paris developed the Scenium aesthetic. RCA Scenium HDTV Monitors feature a high gloss black screen area that separates the different elements of the TV design. This borderless screen creates the illusion of a floating picture that mysteriously emerges from the darkness - much like the movie screen in a dark theater. In addition, the brushed metal control panel and refined cloth-covered speaker enclosures visually represent the three core elements of the home theater experience: picture, technology, and sound - with an added sense of elegance and sophistication that fits in any home theatre environment.
HDTV Monitors Enhanced with Latest Entertainment Technologies
RCA and RCA Scenium HDTV Monitors offer built-in performance enhancements for an expanded viewing experience, including:
-- Progressive scan up-conversion for video sources, eliminating unsightly scan lines for smoother picture performance;
-- Secure digital DVI-HDTV inputs with HDCP copy protection technology to ensure that uncompressed video signals from a set-top device – such as a digital satellite receiver, digital cable box, or other future digital sources – are optimized. This means the best picture possible for HDTV programming;
-- Dual SYNCROSCAN™ HD component video inputs for up to two component video sources such as DVD players and other HDTV set-top receivers;
-- Virtual Dolby® Surround capability to add dynamic theatre-like sound to the entertainment mix. Virtual Dolby provides more separation from sound tracks while a built-in subwoofer output enables dramatic bass sounds. An on-screen five-band equalizer further enhances audio enjoyment with eight sound presets and personalized EQ settings to enable the viewer to personalize audio from the TV.
HD Monitors With Integrated DVD Players, Stylish Clip'On Choices
The D61W135D, D52W135D and the D40W135D rear-projection models and the direct-view D34W135D feature integrated DVD players to deliver a full package of entertainment for consumers. In addition to playing video DVDs, each of the monitors with an integrated DVD player is also compatible with audio CDs, CD-R, and mp3 encoded CDs.
These units feature digital comb filters to virtually eliminate edge crawls and rainbow effects, interactive set-up with on-screen menus, picture-in-picture and multiple front and rear A/V connections with S-video inputs.
To further personalize the flat-screen D34W135D, Thomson product designers created the exclusive Clip’On frame system that allows consumers to choose from multiple colors of decorative frames. The frames easily snap onto the face of the TV, enabling viewers to adapt the cabinet design for various types of room décor.

A Deluxe Shielded Tuner with 181-channel tuning capability dramatically reduces ghosting caused from off-air pick-up when watching cable channels, and Dynamic BlackStretch Circuitry enhances picture contrast and detail. High Performance Scan Velocity Modulation improves sharpness and detail, especially in high-contrast areas.

Ultra-Thin Plasma: A Wall of Entertainment
Combining elegance and technology in a display with a maximum depth of only 4.2 inches, the RCA Scenium 50-inch Plasma HDTV Monitor is equally at home as the focal point of a consumer entertainment system or hanging on a corporate board-room wall. Optional speakers and base are also available.
The 50-inch XGA plasma widescreen RCA Scenium PHD50400 (suggested retail price $ 14,999) has both DVI-HDTV and SYNCROSCAN HD component video interfaces and features a super-bright widescreen display (1000:1 contrast ratio) and 3D Y/C Digital Frame Comb Filter enhanced color separation. The monitor can display high-definition TV images (1365H x 768V) received through a separate set-top decoder.
Performance enhancements include Capsulated Color Filter (CCF) technology for improved color response, resulting in the most realistic color rendering available in plasma monitors. Complementing the CCF technology is Professional Color Management Control, which allows simple and accurate adjustment of on-screen color temperature settings through the monitor's on-screen user menus. In addition, SYNCROSCAN™ conversion technology automatically delivers high-resolution pixel mapping from signal sources up to SXGA resolution, resulting in excellent clarity.
