In 1997, Thomson multimedia and GEMSTAR
formed a joint venture called Television Data Network Inc. to market
electronic program guides. The electronic program guides uses GEMSTAR's
GuidePlus+ technology, a system embedded in the television
set allowing the viewer to access electronic program guide service.
By the end of December 2000, a total of 4 million of Thomson multimedia's
products featuring GuidePlus+ were in the market.
At the beginning of 2000, Thomson multimedia announced the
extension of the advertising supported electronic program guide
service. Moreover, the Group entered into a new strategic agreement
with GEMSTAR to extend cooperation on electronic program guides
in the United States. Under the terms of the agreement, the business
is renamed @TV MEDIA.
Finally, Thomson multimedia and GEMSTAR are involved in the development
of digital book (ebook) products and services. With e-books,
users will be able to connect to on-line libraries to download content,
including novels, newspapers, magazines
