Digital television with DIRECTV

Thomson multimedia has worked in partnership with DIRECTV, a U.S digital satellite broadcast system operator, since the early 1990s for the launch of the first DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) service. In November 1998, the scope of the partnership was expanded from digital satellite systems and set-top boxes in order to develop the new generation of interactive digital televisions and related services and to promote digital television in the U.S.

In June 2000, Thomson multimedia joined forces with DIRECTV and Microsoft to launch a new advanced RCA DIRECTV set-top box with the new Microsoft Ultimate TV service. This new system is the first and only broadcast satellite television plateform that integrates DIRECTV programming, digital video recording, interactive television and Internet access in one complete package.
